ReBlackpool

ReBlackpool’s aim is to renew economic, business and social opportunities in Blackpool, turning the town into a thriving, modern resort fit for the 21st century. Projects they are responsible for delivering include: Talbot Gateway; Regeneration By Light; and the People’s Playground, which will redevelop the sea walls and construct six new headlands, including the £14 million Tower Festival Headland.

Key ReBlackpool Projects

  • The People’s Playground project aims to redevelop Blackpool’s 3.2 kilometre central promenade and transform the central seafront into a year round urban park, with a mythical playground for children and adults that has universal appeal. The concept design and feasibility study of the People’s Playground project are now being progressed and will continue throughout 2009.
  • Tower Festival Headland will provide a new outdoor performance and events space capable of accommodating up to 20,000 spectators. The £14 million Tower Festival Headland project has received £4 million through the Government’s Sea Change programme.
  • Work on Regeneration By Light – a redevelopment of town centre lighting to encourage visitors to explore town centre streets – began in 2006 and is due to finish mid-2009. The work includes a welcoming beacon atop Blackpool Tower, architectural lighting of the town hall and a year-round illuminations spectacle into the existing town centre, culminating in a centrepiece sound and light show in Birley Street.
  • Work on the 10-year £250 million redevelopment of the Talbot Gateway area of the town is scheduled to start in 2011. The plans include a new civic and cultural centre within a large, mixed use, pedestrian-friendly development.
  • The redevelopment of the 12.8 ha site in northeast Blackpool will feature new retail, commercial, community, residential and civic office space in addition to town centre parking and transport facilities. It will include a new public square, council offices, a courthouse, a 6,500 sq m supermarket, two hotels and a town centre multi-screen cinema.
  • Blackpool has successfully bid with Preston for Housing Growth Point status and the proposals are now being developed. Projects in both North and South Beach are currently being looked at by English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation for the New Homes & Community Agency.
