How to Apply

Grant for Research and Development is changing.

From 1 January 2008 the maximum grant for a research project will increase to £100,000. The maximum grant for a development project will increase to £250,000. These rates will apply to the whole of England. Projects based in assisted areas will no longer qualify for separate bonuses.

These rates will apply to all new grants from 1 January 2008, regardless of when applications are received. The changes are set out in more detail in the table below.

Micro Projects

De minimis aid of £2,500 - £20,000 for most micro businesses covering 50% of eligible costs

Aid of £5,000 - £20,000 for all micro businesses covering 45% of eligible costs

Research Projects

Grants of £20,000 - £75,000 for micro and small businesses covering 60% of eligible costs

Assisted Area uplift of 70% in Tier 1 and 65% in Tier 2

Grants of £20,000 - £100,000 for micro and small businesses covering 60% of eligible costs

No uplift for Assisted Areas

Development Projects

Grants of £20,000 - £200,000 for micro, small and medium sized businesses covering 35% of eligible costs

Assisted Area uplift of 10% in Tier 1 and 5% in Tier 2 

Grants of £20,000 - £250,000 for micro, small and medium sized businesses covering 35% of eligible costs

No uplift for Assisted Areas

Exceptional Development Projects

Grants of £200,000 - £500,000 for micro, small and medium sized businesses negotiable up to 35% of eligible costs

Grants of £250,000 - £500,000 for micro, small and medium sized businesses negotiable up to 35% of eligible costs

     
 

The assisted area uplifts have been remove in order to comply with the European Commission State aid framework. 

To apply for a Grant for Research and Development you need to:

  • Complete the Application Form
  • Put together a proposal as specified in the Guidance Notes
  • Read the information regarding Technical Advisors
  • Return two hard copy applications and supporting documentation, including accounts, any Patent Office searches and evidence of funding or support, by post or hand to the following address:
