England’s Northwest preparing for 2012

In July 2005, London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012 and set up the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG). England’s Northwest is represented on the Nations & Regions Group set up by LOCOG to ensure appropriate communication with the rest of the UK. In addition, a Northwest Steering Group has been established to develop and implement plans to ensure that the region fully plays its part in supporting the Games and exploits the many opportunities that they bring. The NWDA is represented on this Steering Group.

Business, tourism, sports development, culture, along with the health and volunteering sectors, all stand to gain from the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The Northwest’s experience in developing and exploiting major events such as the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture in 2008 should ensure that the region is well placed to gain maximum benefit from the Olympic Games.

Business

The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) is working with regional business organisations to coordinate support to Northwest businesses. We want to be able to maximise opportunities for businesses throughout the Northwest to win new business leading up to, during and after the 2012 Games to complement the long term growth and productivity of the region’s economy.

To support this work, a NW Business Forum has been established to bring together regional business organisations to coordinate future work. The Forum comprises of representatives from NWDA, Northwest Business Leadership Team (NWBLT), Institute of Directors (IOD), Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Northwest Chamber of Commerce, Business Link Northwest, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), GONW, Food NW, Envirolink and Engineering & Employers Federation (EEF).

To understand the opportunities for the Northwest, the NWDA commissioned Deloitte's to undertake an evaluation of the business opportunities that will be created from Games.
