The Natural Environment

The natural environment of the Northwest is amongst the best in England. Here you will find England’s largest National Park, three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and over 1000 kilometres of magnificent coastline. In fact, over 80% of the region is countryside, and our cities are full of green spaces too.

England’s Northwest is home to a multitude of landscapes supporting a myriad of plants and animals. From the rolling Cheshire plain to wild and rugged Scafell Pike, and from rare red squirrels to swathes of swaying daffodils, this is one of the most naturally diverse regions of England. Together they contribute enormously to the quality of life that is one of the region’s strengths.

These wonderful assets all need to be maintained and enhanced. Sensitively developing the natural environment whilst retaining its environmental quality is a major objective for the region.  Ensuring better alignment of environmental activities and economic gain will help to achieve this. Recognising the environment as a key economic resource will promote better environmental management and help us to tackle the issue of climate change.
