Climate Change
The NWDA is working hard with its partners to tackle
climate change.
In November 2006, the Agency launched the region’s Climate
Change Action Plan to address the threats and opportunities that
climate change presents. ‘Rising to
the Challenge: A Climate Change Action Plan for England’s
Northwest’ sets out the Northwest's mission to become the
leading region on climate change by 2020.
The development and implementation of a Climate Change Action
Plan is one of the 'transformational’ activities within the
Regional Economic Strategy (RES). The Action Plan aims to stimulate
and measure the progress of the region towards a low carbon
economy, preparing it for the challenges of a changing climate and
future energy demands, while protecting and enhancing our quality
of life and rich environment.
The threats of climate change are serious. But as businesses
adapt to these threats, there are also real opportunities for
the environmental technologies sector to profit - the Stern
Review in 2006 highlighted a £30 billion opportunity for British
business over the next ten years. The increasing need for
environmental measures such as waste management, renewable energy,
pollution control and energy efficiency, will reap economic and
environmental rewards for the region.
It is intended that the Action Plan will be reviewed every three
years. The region’s success will be monitored and progress will be
reported annually. The production of the plan was a regional truly
effort. Excellent feedback was gained during the consultation
phase, demonstrating the growing importance that everyone in the
Northwest is placing on tackling global warming.
