The Kendal Mountain Festival is the largest and most varied
event of its type in Europe.
The lecture line-up looks set to be the best
yet. Names to savour include Reinhold Messner, often cited as the
greatest mountaineer of all time and a rare opportunity to hear one
of the true greats in the mountain world; Mark Beaumont, who cycled
18,000 miles around the globe by bicycle in 194 days and 17 hours,
breaking the existing World Record by a margin of 81 days; while
David Breashears is the climber and IMAX film-maker made famous
during the 1996 Everest disaster when five climbers perished near
the summit.
At the heart of Kendal’s programme is the
mountain film competition, attracting film premieres from around
the world. Over 60 films are screened (from 300+ entries) with ten
coveted prizes up for grabs.
Together with the Art and Book Festivals, the
Boardman Tasker literary award plus the Adventure Film Academy for
aspiring film-makers, it promises to be another unmissable
year.
