Keeping the Commonwealth Games Spirit Alive
Over a month after the Commonwealth Games came to a close,
England's Northwest proves that although the sport has ended, the
legacy of the Games is still going strong.
In a special presentation on September 18th at Tameside College,
successful students who completed the Commonwealth Games
Pre-Volunteer Programme are to see their valued and vital efforts
rewarded.
The programme, supported by the Northwest Development Agency
(NWDA), received £54,000 from the Single Regeneration Budget. It
proved to be a fantastic opportunity for residents of the Northwest
to become involved in the Commonwealth Games. Volunteers not only
grasped the unique opportunity to be involved in this historic
event, but many have used the training and experience to find
employment.
Tomorrow's presentation will also provide graduates of the
course with possible progress advice and a number of further
employment opportunities in an aptly titled "What Next?"
session.
The certificates are to be awarded by five-times Karate champion
Geoff Thompson MBE and Mumtaz Bashir of Manchester City
Council.
Coral Grainger, Regeneration Manager, NWDA said:
"It is wonderful to see the spirit of the Commonwealth Games
continuing to thrive. The volunteers did a wonderful job, and were
a credit to Manchester and England's Northwest. The NWDA are
delighted to provide funding for a programme that continues to help
so many people, and helped make the Games such a success"
Sue Vickers, Guidance Officer, Commonwealth Games Pre-Volunteer
Programme said:
"This is the next step for volunteers in Tameside to ensure all the
skills and experiences gained during the Games are used to meet new
challenges."
