mediacity:uk consortium

A response to the BBC Board of Governors' decision today regarding mediacity:uk -
an ambitious scheme to deliver the UK's first media city, an innovative creative hub covering
200 acres in Salford, Greater Manchester, with the BBC as the catalyst.

Said Salford City Council leader Cllr John Merry:

"This is a great Christmas present for the city. We"ve always been confident that the move to
Salford represents value for money and are delighted that the BBC Governors have
endorsed this today. We"ve overcome another significant hurdle in this process, which brings
us even closer to realising what will be a ground breaking project. We are
grateful to the BBC for its commitment to the city and the North as a whole.

"We look forward to resolving the licence fee settlement and invite those who doubted this
project would ever happen to celebrate with us on what has been achieved to date."

Bryan Gray, Chair Northwest Regional Development Agency and Chair of the
mediacity:uk steering group, said, on behalf of The Consortium:

"The mediacity:uk Consortium, (Salford City Council, Peel Holdings, Central Salford and the
NWDA) welcomes today's announcement that the move to Salford represents value for
money. We particularly welcome the Governors stated belief that the move is in the interest
of licence fee payers and the BBC.  We will continue to work with the BBC to deliver this project which will benefit not only licence fee payers but also the media industry and the UK economy."

Felicity Goodey, Chief Executive, mediacity:uk:

"This is another important step forward for mediacity:uk. We are delighted that the BBC
Governors have strongly endorsed the value of this project and the benefits that this will
bring to the North of England and to the UK as a whole. The mediacity:uk project is about
helping to strengthen the future of Britain's media and new media industries and the BBC is
the catalyst that will allow us to create a globally significant media hub. mediacity:uk is one of
the most significant developments in British broadcasting in recent years and the team is
moving ahead apace to ensure the project is delivered and that these enormous benefits are
realised."
