NWDA statement welcoming the establishment of a National Nuclear Laboratory in West Cumbria

Commenting on today"s statement by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Bryan Gray, Chairman of the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), said:

"I am delighted that the Secretary of State has recognised the importance of ensuring the ongoing competitiveness and success of the UK's excellent skills and facilities in civil nuclear research.

"The Northwest, and West Cumbria in particular, is home to over 50% of the UK"s civil nuclear workforce and the vast majority of its research excellence.  The region has a vital role to play in ensuring that the UK maintains its competitiveness in this area.

"Today"s announcement of a National Nuclear Laboratory, and the inclusion of the skills and facilities that the region has, is a major step in securing future success.  Partners in the region and across the UK have been working hard to support the DTI with the analysis and evidence they needed. This is an excellent example of national government working with regions, national industry and research bodies to gather this evidence and take a decision based on the long-term needs of a vital and economically important sector.

"Cumbria"s economic development plan, and the emerging West Cumbria Masterplan identify this initiative as a key priority, so this is an important and welcome demonstration of the government"s commitment."
