The Princess Royal opens the Bolton TIC
The Bolton Technical Innovation Centre (TIC) was officially launched this week by the Princess Royal. The TIC is the UK"s first "Junior Incubator", a brand new concept developed in the North West of England which links education and industry in a new and exciting way, lying somewhere between a school, university research laboratory, training centre and a factory.
Bolton TIC has been created to nurture innovation and enterprise in young people. It hopes to inspire a new generation of science, engineering and technology enthusiasts. The centre is open to young people from 9 to 19 years of age from North West schools. It is open during and beyond the school day, at weekends and during holidays.
The purpose-designed building has been funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), and supported by Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council. Some of the programmes within the centre are supported by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA). It also offers excellent conference facilities with a lecture theatre, exhibition space, breakout rooms and a catering service on hand.
Maurice Gubbins, Policy and Partnership Manager at the NWDA, said:
"This centre will help to create new opportunities for young people in Bolton, enabling them to access leading edge technologies and business expertise to help turn their ideas into potential business ventures. Projects such as this are crucial in helping to stimulate an enterprising culture in the region's young people, providing the support to help our future entrepreneurs gain access business advice and educational and training facilities, and the NWDA is pleased to provide its support."
