Improvements to Oxford Street underpass in Workington
Improvement works have been completed on one of the main routes
into Workington town centre for traffic and pedestrians.
The refurbishment of the Oxford Street underpass is designed to
make the area more attractive to visitors and residents. It
includes the cleaning of the sandstone walls and flight of steps as
well as the laying of new sandstone paving on the footpaths along
with traditional road kerbs and granite set margins.
The handrails and steelwork around the bridge have been given a
fresh coat of paint and new signs put up.
In addition, the bridge has been fitted with an aluminium mesh
lining designed to stop birds roosting under it and causing a
potential health hazard and nuisance to passing pedestrians and
motorists. This specialist feature was included following a number
of complaints received from members of the public about birds
fouling the area.
Specialist LED coloured lighting has been installed at ground
level to guide pedestrians along the underpass, with similar
lighting added to the bridge higher up.
The work, which also aims to make the area both look and feel
safer for pedestrians at all times of the day and night, was funded
with £200,000 from the NWDA and £90,323 from Allerdale Borough
Council.
The one way route heading down to Brow Top car park, which was
temporarily lifted for traffic while the works were taking place,
has now been reinstated.
