Liverpool pioneers regional community renewable energy fund

Liverpool City Council (LCC) in partnership with Foundation, a climate fund for the North West, has today (Monday, February 8th) become the first local authority in England’s North West to launch a community renewable power initiative that will deliver measurable carbon savings.

Grants are available to charities, community groups and schools based in the city for micro generation schemes such as wind and solar projects and heat pumps that need some funding to make a start. The fund totaling up to £100,000 comes from LCC’s Area Based Grant Programme and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).

Foundation is an innovative climate fund for the Northwest that helps local organisations to tackle climate change. Foundation will manage and administer the fund, applying its environmental expertise to assess the carbon benefit of each project proposed.

To officially launch the city’s community renewable power funding scheme, Liverpool City Council’s Assistant Executive Member for the Environment, Cllr Phil Moffatt will be joined with Foundation’s Chief Officer, Mark Turner at KIND SEED Environmental Centre.

Councillor Phil Moffatt, Assistant Executive Member for the Environment, said “Liverpool City Council is driving towards a low carbon city and wants to support our local community to come with us on this exciting journey.”

Mark Turner, Foundation’s Chief Officer says: “Foundation is especially interested to receive applications from groups working within the community who have a renewable power project that will deliver measurable carbon savings.”

“Our partnership with LCC is a first for Foundation and we can’t wait to start working in a city renowned for its pioneers and creative thinkers. We’re anticipating some real ground-breaking applications from groups in Liverpool that will help to make a significant contribution to delivering the region’s Climate Change Action Plan.”

Stephen Yip from the charity, KIND, added: “The KIND SEED centre is an innovative and exciting environmental education resource for both children and adults.  We are pleased to host the launch of this new community renewal power fund and hope that it will encourage others to become more sustainable.”

Notes to editors

The Liverpool Community Renewal Power fund can award grants of up to £50,000 to local community groups based in Liverpool.

Foundation gathers up donations from people and businesses and uses them to support individual carbon reduction projects across the Northwest, projects with environmental and social benefits that would otherwise be overlooked. From energy saving measures to credit unions, all these seemingly small projects can make a much bigger impact together.

Founded by Stephen Yip, MBE in 1975, KIND is a children’s charity that believes in the importance of investing in the future-our children. Every year, we work with thousands of children, young people and their families across Liverpool and greater Merseyside, pioneering new and imaginative ways to help them cope with many forms of disadvantage. www.kind.org.uk
